BOTTOM LINE: Greece's "Postcard Island", Santorini is one of the most famous romantic vacation destinations in the world and we can see why. Officially called Thira, Santorini is essentially what remains after one of the largest volcanic eruptions on Earth. The two towns you'll most likely spend a bit of time in are either Fira or Oia but we say book your stay in Imerovigli to avoid cruise ship crowds as well as to get the best views of the sunset. Not only is Imerovigli peaceful but at 300 meters above sea level, it also boasts the highest views. Imerovigli just feels more intimate and special. It's also within walking distance to Fira, if you're looking for nightlife. Although Oia is very photogenic, it's too touristy for our liking. If you have a full week, we recommend you resort hop within different towns to get the best of both worlds. May through August is high season in Santorini and we recommend April or September to enjoy slightly more moderate temperatures and at better prices.
GRACE SANTORINI, was our pick as a sanctuary removed from the cruise ship madness and its prime spot for the famed Santorini sunsets. (Arguably better than Oia.) This place has a magical sense of place and you'll find it hard to leave, especially when it comes down to parting with the gracious staff. We especially love that many of the rooms come with your own personal plunge pools! On the other side of town in Oia, (20 min driving distance from Imerovigli) you'll be struggling to fend off crowds of tourists. If you have the chance to also check out Oia, which is different but still beautiful, we recommend the KATIKIES for its WOW factor. Nothing beats the infinity pools (several!) and the level of service is impeccable. We especially recommend this for those who have trouble with stairs as this is one of the very few resorts that actually have elevators.
