Malliouhana Opening Nov. 1st!

We've always loved Malliouhana for its authentic charm and serene white sand beaches. However, the property needed updating and Auberge has come to the rescue. It has been closed for 3 years and we couldn't be more excited about the renovation and long awaited reopening, particularly after seeing the fabulous job Auberge did updating The Hotel Jerome in Aspen which maintains a Strong Sense of Place - a Luxette requisite!

Here are some sneak peek pics and fun facts:
  • The November 1st opening marks 30 years to the day since the doors originally opened at Malliouhana
  • The hotel boasts 2 gorgeous white sand (Anguilla style) beaches
  • Open-air, cliffside Restaurant at Malliouhana is run by NY chef Jeremy Bearman
  • Caribbean villa-styled spa

  • Park Hyatt NY Soft Opens with Official Opening August 19!

As visitors to properties in Shanghai, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Istanbul and the Maldives can attest to, Park Hyatt towers above other hotels in the Hyatt chain. With 32 locations around the world, Park Hyatts are often the newest, most architecturally exceptional and best-in-class hotels in many of the cities where they reside. In the US we’ve had limited exposure to the level of luxury, chic décor and glamour that Park Hyatts offer with some exceptions (e.g. Chicago, Washington D.C.). We are hoping that the new 57th Street structure will change that and look forward to checking in and checking it all out!

    Fun facts:
    • The hotel is located in Midtown West between 6th & 7th Avenues, walking distance from Carnegie Hall & Central Park
    • Standard rooms will be among the largest in NYC, averaging 475 square feet
    • Rooms start at $795
    • The hotel will have 210 guest rooms and 92 suites which boast floor to ceiling windows and spectacular views
    • Designed by award winning architect Christian de Portzamparc
    • Interior is by design studio Yabu Pushelberg (other projects include Four Seasons Toronto, W Times Square & Viceroy Maldives)
    • The Living Room bar will feature views of Carnegie Hall (pictures Coming Soon!)
    • The hotel’s signature restaurant, The Back Room at One57, opens August 25th

Stay Tuned: More pictures coming this week and we’ll be reviewing the restaurant along with the hotel in early September!

  • OH MY...MAUDE!!!

    A true LA culinary adventure

What to know before you go:
Dinner is comprised of 9 courses accentuating the seasonal ingredient of the month.  June is morels. July will be berries! August, corn!
Price is prix fixe based on the ingredient of the month.
There were two wine pairings offered with our meal, Classic $80 pp & Reserve $125 pp.  Spring for the Reserve if you decide to do a pairing. The wines and sake are sensational. Otherwise, choose your own from the wine list, the Classic is less expensive, but can be less interesting than some of the individual wines.

Inside Scoop:  Unless you need to gaze into your date’s eyes (in which case you can stay home on the sofa) try for one of the 4 seats at the bar where you get a front row viewing of the amazing preparations and some fun insights from the chefs (Ooh La La!) that you may miss from a table.

The 9 courses are small, rich and each morsel is a nugget of epicurean delight. We sat at the bar and watched some amazing prep, incredible chef tools and gadgets that led to the beautiful creations we received, which tasted even better than they looked. This is definitely the best meal we’ve had in our hometown of LA and we can’t wait to return.  Just imagine these tasting even more sumptuous than they look:

  • The New Tavern on the Green

Tavern on the Green Reopens with a Gorgeous aesthetic, new menu, management and chef.  Located in one of our favorite spots in Central Park, we’ve always had some trouble swallowing the food and prices at this landmark restaurant, which was a fabulous icon much in need of a revival.

After a closure following bankruptcy 6 years ago, we are excited about the Spring Reopening.  Here’s a sneak peak of what to look forward to  - we can’t wait to try chef Katy Sparks' new menu and brunch which begins this Mother’s Day weekend!

    Fun Facts
    • Built in 1870 to house sheep grazing in Central Park’s Sheep’s Meadow, Tavern on the Green has just reopened – currently serving dinner & brunch starts this Saturday!
    • In 1934 the sheep were banished to Prospect Park in Brooklyn - sadly the only sheep adorning the Tavern today are on the signposts
    • Runners Delight: For those running the NYC marathon, the Tavern can serve as a goalpost, sitting right by the finish line. (We’ve always found it a great place as spectators too!)
    • Up until the financial crisis, the Tavern was one of the largest grossing restaurants in the US, on par with some of Vegas’ most oversized restaurants
    • Restaurateurs David Salama and Jim Caiola hail from Philly and aim to add a casual, intimate rustic feel to what was once a more staid, oversized and refined ambiance
    • Film Flashback: Just a few films where The Tavern has been prominently featured:  Arthur, Ghostbusters, Heartburn, Wall Street, Beaches, Crimes and Misdemeanors and New York Stories

  • Oooh La (Shangri) La!

As you know, the Luxettes are particularly obsessed with HOTEL OPENINGS and the shine and glimmer of trying out the newest hotels on the globe. We have been hanging in anticipation of a flurry of exciting hotels that are to set to open over the next several months.

London has been a hotspot for such openings with Rosewood, ME & Ian Schrager’s Edition all making their mark last year in the city across the pond.  This Spring, the newest addition to the burgeoning hotel scene is The Shangri-La, At The Shard and if it’s anything like the relatively new Shangri-La Paris, where Mr. X happily squats on his frequent Paris trips, we can’t wait for the May 6th opening!

Check out our advance photos and follow us for the inside scoop.  We are also booking now with some Luxette perks!

    Some hotel highlights:
    • The hotel sits on 18 floors of the tallest building in Western Europe
    • Suite bathtubs with a view!
    • One of the few hotel brands to have a real handle on the luxury butler service experience, and more importantly to us, free wifi (paid wifi being one of our biggest peeves when staying at luxury hotels!)
    • "Lost Horizon" and Asian influences adorn the lobby
    • A quick stroll to Tate Modern & Shakespeare’s Globe

Stay tuned for our review once this property gets up and running and to find out our top pick of this year’s London hotel openings!

  • A Superba Addition: Doors Open at the Much Anticipated Superba Food & Bread

The key to life is… a Luxe Leisurely breakfast.
After staying in 12 different hotels over the last 7 weeks, it’s good to be home. Last night we downed a few (off menu) Bravehearts at Tasting Kitchen on Abbot Kinney and then headed over to Lincoln to try dinner at the newly opened and long awaited Superba Food + Bread.

The whole dining experience was so good, we came back for breakfast!  It goes without saying that this will likely be the spot for the next Luxette Lunch as well. With the friendliest staff in town we are so excited to have this new neighborhood addition just a stone’s throw away from the Luxette offices.

What’s Exceptional: Try the pretzel croissants with different fillings each day, the coffee with hazelnut milk (a new favorite for the vegan in the office), the sweet and savory daily quiches and the avocado and burrata toasts at dinner.

    More to come…

    XOXO,
    M.
